Freeing imagination one click at a time
Over a year ago, flipping through the channels, a striking black and white image came across the screen. I had to stop to get a better look. It turned out to be a documentary of the award-winning Spanish photographer, Chema Madoz. Instantly I was captivated. Part of it was the twinkle in his eye, I must say. As I watched him speak, his expressions carried a curious mixture of playfulness and depth with a pinch of mischievousness; an intriguing combination. The more I watched, I realized it was that very expression that came through the lens of the camera as he took pictures of what would normally be mundane objects.
His subject matter are everyday objects presented in an unexpected way. With strong composition, clean lines, purposeful lighting, minimal subjects, the images are graphically very striking. They grab you. The best part, however, is when you discover the element of surprise that beautifully comes to light with a poetic twist. It is then, when you find yourself smiling with the very same twinkle in your eye as Chema Madoz.
He is surely one my most favorite photographers. Born and based in Madrid, his prolific work can be seen throughout Spain and Internationally, accumulating numerous awards and recognition. Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon his exhibition at La Pedrera in Barcelona soon after I saw the documentary. I spent hours reveling in the details.
