Meet the Artist

Meet the Artist

As the creative pen of the blog I thought I should introduce myself. I am Debbie Sun, a cheerful, always smiling artist, designer, dreamer, lover of patterns, photography, silkpainting and anything and everything creative.

As a new business, I find myself writing many bios for promotional pieces. I have to say, all of it is beginning to sound the same. Basic facts, I was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, WI. I grew up and continue to live in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. I studied Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley, later received an MBA and studied and exhibited art in Barcelona. Barcelona is where I lived for almost seven years before returning to St. Croix in July of 2014. The moment I landed, I began making a dream come true. I opened up a design studio, creating my first collection of textiles for home décor.

This time, as an introduction, I thought I would shake things up a little. Instead of delving into the bio details, I thought I would offer up lists of some of my favorites which inevitably will give you (and I) insights to who I am, how I think, and most likely, how random I can be. It is a fun way to get to know someone.

Let the discovery begin... 😉

Fabric painting

Why did I choose to start with the most intimate and inexplicable category? My taste in music is all across the board. Describing my playlists as -eclectic- doesn't even come close.

Instead of Favorite Music, this list is better entitled, Favorite Bands who I can listen to the entire album at any point in my life. In no way is this list in any particular order as it would be impossible to rank my favorites. Narrowing it down to 5 is an achievement in it of itself.

  1. U2
  2. Bob Marley
  3. Joaquin Sabina
  4. Xavier Rudd
  5. The Cat Empire

Hotel Royal

  1. Antoni Gaudi
  2. Fuller Buckminster
  3. Mies Van de Rohe
  4. Frank Lloyd Wright
  5. Toyo Ito

(I don't always remember the details, what I remember is the experience.)

  1. Dolphins swimming alongside the sailboat at sunset.
  2. The electrifying energy as an entire city of Barcelona celebrated the triple win of their footbal team, Barça.
  3. As I held my breath, opening the package of the very first fabrics printed, my eyes welled up with delight and pride.
  4. Under the stars with a cool summer breeze, transported into an enchanting world as I listened to one of the most amazingly talented guitarists ever, Paco de Lucia.
  5. The magical evening shared with over 90,000 fans completely dazzled with lights, cameras and pure excitement for the U2 concert at Camp Nou, a band continually evolving and full of surprises.

  1. Gustav Klimt
  2. Claude Oscar Monet
  3. Pablo Picasso
  4. Vincent van Gogh
  5. Gerard van Honthorst

  1. Hummus
  2. Roti
  3. Tapas
  4. Anything Chocolate
  5. Grilled everything

  1. Nuevo Estilo
  2. MACO Caribbean Living
  3. Living, etc
  4. AD Spain
  5. Elle Decor

  1. Top Gun
  2. Pulp Fiction
  3. Good Will Hunting
  4. ET The Extra-Terrestrial
  5. Wimbledon (so incredibly cheesy that it made me smile)

I could go on and on with lists. At least now you have a sneak peak into the inner thoughts of Debbie Sun, some more embarrassing than others. In conclusion, since this is a textile design blog, let's finish up this post with my...

  1. Summer Fun
  2. Pink Abstract
  3. Kaleidoscope
  4. Swaying Palms
  5. Criss Crossing

See more designs on my portfolio page.

I cannot wait to get busy again with new designs. There are many in my head anxiously awaiting their debut!
